D DAY; 06/06/2019

It has been an exceptionally beautiful Spring here in the Texas Hill Country. We have been blessed with abundant rain at the right times along with plentiful sunshine. The hills are festooned with every possible shade of green; the flowers were, and are, spectacular with reds and yellows and purples and blues and whites filling the fields and highway right-of-ways; and the rivers are running full and clear. It is a grand time to be alive. To what do we owe this bounty of Nature and the freedom to enjoy it?

75 years ago the beaches on Normandy were not beautiful or hospitable locations for tens of thousands of young Americans, Brits, Canadians, French, Poles, etc. They did not stop to admire the beauty of nature or smell the flowers. Rather, they fought and died to defeat the scourge of fascism and free Europe and the world from the grip of Hitler and Nazi Germany. They fought and bled and died so that we could reap the benefits of freedom bought with their blood and sacrifice. They plunged into the hail and hell of bullets and artillery shells not for glory or personal gain but for Freedom Рfreedom to live where we want, do what we want, worship as we  want, and raise our families as we want.

Lincoln said it best at Gettysburg:

“The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

The freedoms we take for granted are delicate creatures that must be nourished and renewed by each succeeding generation. It is up to us, the living, to guarantee those freedoms to our children and grandchildren.
